Grab a cozy blanket and cuddle up with the children to enjoy this wonderful story about a man who rose out of slavery and worked his way (with his wife by his side) into a life he never could have imagined. This story is a family favorite and exemplifies how hard work, perseverance and the courage to take risks can lead to amazing achievements that were rare and difficult for the former slaves of that generation. Tonya Bolden did this biographical children’s book great justice with her storytelling and, as always, Don Tate brought it to life with beautiful and modern illustration style.
